Maine Jamboree '07

Pre-Jam Tips and Information
Review these tips to ensure you are prepared

Greetings from your Subcamp staff!

Each unit camping at the Maine Jam ’07 will be assigned to one of our six Subcamps named for places in Scouting History and each one assigned to a district.

Brownsea Island- Subcamp headquarters
London- Downeast District
Gilwell Park – Kennebec Valley District
Silver Bay – Abanki District
Olympia – York District
Hylands Park – Casco Bay District

Each Subcamp has a subcamp chief and commissioner staff waiting to welcome you, help get you settled, and keep you informed throughout Maine Jam ‘07.

Here are some notes from the Subcamps to help you prepare:

  1. Arrival Time: Units may begin arriving at 3 PM on Friday to start setting up their campsites. Please do not arrive before 3 PM, as we will be using that time for set-up and training.
  2. Entering Oxford Fairgrounds: All units will enter through the main gates, which is on the Pottle Road right off from Rte. 26 by the Oxford Shopping Center. To help keep a smooth traffic flow through the main gate at the Fairgrounds, Units need to plan to travel together and carpool, or units should plan on trying to meet outside of the gates (perhaps at the Oxford Plains Speedway or Oxford Shopping Center) to move equipment to one vehicle and carpool through the gates.
  3. Roads: The roads throughout the Fairgrounds will be one-way traffic.
  4. Check-in procedures: At the Main Gate, each pre-registered unit will be given a vehicle unloading pass that will allow for only 1 vehicle to stop at the subcamps and unload equipment.
  5. Check-in at your subcamp: All pre-registered units will be given a packet of information which will include: patches for every participant, armbands for every participant, emergency procedures to share with the Scouts and up to date schedules and program information. Units will need to turn in a copy of the unit roster, camping fees for any unregistered participants, and medical forms for all campers in a manila envelope. Patches and armbands for extra campers will be passed out within the Subcamps.
  6. Unit/Troop Equipment Trailers or vehicles: Each registered unit will receive one vehicle pass at registration at the Main Gate. This will allow for only one vehicle per unit to unload at a time. Once the vehicle / trailer is unloaded it must move to the parking lot. NO VEHICLES OR TRAILERS WILL BE ALLOWED TO REMAIN AT THE CAMPSITES. OFFSITE PARKING LOTS WILL BE AVAILABLE AND SHUTTLES WILL BE IN PLACE.
  7. First Aid: Each subcamp will have at least one medical staff in the Subcamps at all times to treat Scouts or visitors with minor first aid issues. The Maine Jam Health Officers will be called to assist with any major injuries or concerns. Jamboree first aid stations will be available throughout the jamboree site. Units should be prepared with a first aid kit to take prompt initial action as needed. All injuries that a unit treats need to be reported to the Subcamp health officer.\
  8. Health Forms: Every weekend camper, adults and youth, must have a Class 1 medical form on file during the Jamboree. Units will need to bring copies of the Class 1(or above) forms for every person in a manila envelope to turn into the Subcamp at check-in. The health forms will be return to the Scout leader at checkout. Class 1 health forms do not require a doctor’s physical.
  9. Unit Displays: Every unit should bring a weatherproof display (no more than 4’ x 4’) highlighting a place, time or event in Scouting history. No unit gateways will be allowed due to site size restrictions.
  10. Campsites: Each unit will be given a campsite with the size based on the number of people camping. Campsites will be assigned during check-in.
  11. Unit equipment: units should be prepared with tents, ground cloths, lanterns, flashlights, etc to make your stay enjoyable. Dining flies and shelters will be allowed but please keep in mind that space will be limited.
  12. Campsite inspections: Campsites will be inspected over the weekend by the subcamp commissioner staff. Units will receive a commemorative Maine Jam ribbon based on the ribbon requirements.
  13. Fires: ABSOLUTLEY NO GROUND FIRES WILL BE ALLOWED. This is for the safety of all due to the close proximity and a policy of the Oxford Fairgrounds. Charcoal cooking fires will be permitted as long as they are off the ground in a fireproof container. No cooking equipment will be available at the Fairground and all ash must be disposed as if it were trash. Please plan ahead and plan meals using cook stoves.
  14. Liquid Fuel Policy: The Maine Jam will follow the BSA liquid fuel policies. Scouts must be thoroughly checked out on stove operation and must have adult supervision.
  15. Meals: We recommend units bring easy to fix meals. Trail Style lunches are encouraged as this will give Scouts a chance to see as much of the Maine Jam as possible. Concession stands will be open for snacks, and lunches.
  16. Trash: Units are expected to keep their campsites clean. Please carry in and carry out your trash. Everyone should be using “Leave No Trace” camping techniques.
  17. Sumps and gray water: no traditional sumps will be permitted. Units may dispose of gray water by carrying it to the designated dump stations. Bring a bucket to collect and use to dispose of your gray water.
  18. Weather: What can we say, this is Maine! October’s weather can be almost anything- so be prepared!
  19. Checkout: Units should be prepared to checkout no later than noontime on Sunday. Campsites must be left clean of all debris. Units must be checked out by a subcamp commissioner before departure.
